The objective of the program was to help establish a test methodology for evaluating crash compatibility and aggressiveness of intermediate, subcompact, and lightweight subcompact cars. As a result of this program, the NHTSA Test Device was developed to measure the basic types of aggressiveness; namely, architectural, mass, and structural aggressiveness. This Test Device is a unique segmented honeycomb load measuring tool which is adaptable to both moving barrier and fixed barrier collisions. Eight full-scale car-to-Test Device collisions were conducted to provide comprehensive data comparison between moving Test Device tests and fixed Test Device tests. The four representative 1975 model cars included Honda Civic CVCC, Volvo 244DL, Ford Torino, and Plymouth Fury. Data comparisons were also made with relevant car-to-car and car-to-fixed barrier test from previous NHTSA contracts. Section 5.0 addresses vehicle aggressivity assessment, illustrating some simple approaches for determining the relative aggressivity of two vehicles, using the Ford Torino and Plymouth Fury as examples.
