The operation of the Katy Freeway Transitway in the second year was evaluated. Despite the many-fold increase in the number of vehicles on the transitway after 2 carpools were introduced, the time savings for the transitway traffic relative to the traffic on the parallel freeway mainlanes remained substantial. During the second year of transitway operation, two transitway-related accidents were reported. The amount of vehicle traffic on the freeway mainlanes in the morning and the afternoon periods during the second year of transitway operation increased by about 6 percent relative to the level in the year prior to the opening of the transitway. Total traffic volumes for the combined Katy Freeway (mainlanes plus transitway) for the morning and afternoon peak periods were shown to have increased similarly during this second year of transitway operation. The presence of the transitway lane in the freeway median was not shown to have resulted in a higher number of accidents on the freeway mainlaines in either the first or second year of operation.
