Phenomena associated with thunderstorms and presenting a potential hazard for aviation are discussed. The structure of thunderstorm systems, updrafts and energy involved, icing, hail, downdrafts, turbulence, and lightning are described. Difficulties in detecting potential hazards for aviation are reviewed. The deficiencies of the detection methods are pointed out.
