Background information on the procedures followed when a new flight deck has to be developed is presented. The Boeing 747-400 is used as a typical example. Dealings between the manufacturer and the airline company are outlined. The airline input is useful to achieve a safe, economic and user friendly product. Only a fraction of the discussions are covered. These include: the integrated display system; EFIS and ELCAS features; caution and warning features; navigation; and autoflight.
