Starting from an examination of flight opportunities, examples of small spacecraft applicable to Earth observation missions are described. A survey of satellites already flown had shown that they are rather large and heavy, with average mass of 1500 kg and volume larger than one cubic meter. It is shown that the presented concepts of small payloads design are profitable in Earth observation.
