A program was developed as a proposed model for automating the load-planning process for containerized cargo ships. The model requires an input providing information on the containers to be loaded (weight, destination, type cargo, etc.), the ships' stowage design and hydrostatic properties, and the order of port calls to be made in the voyage. Using this information, each container is assigned to a specific stowage cell in the ship. The assignment method is designed to provide a complete load-plan which meets requirements for ship trim and stability, safety regulations governing hazardous cargo stowage, and minimization or elimination of 'overstow' conditions. The program is presented in flowchart format to promote easy comprehension of the steps involved and allow coding into any programming language desired. (Author)
