The water towing tank of the DFVLR Institute of Applied Mathematics and Mechanics in Freiburg has been in operation since 1965. It is especially suitable for investigations of boundary layers, ground effects in the take-off and landing phase of aircraft, wakes, instationary flows and flow phenomena in stratified fluids. The basin has a cross-section of 3.6 ft by 3 ft and an effective towing length of 27 ft. Towing velocities range from 0.016 to 16 ft/sec. The test facility has proved to be very suitable and cheap in operation for the research problems investigated up to now. It is therefore described in more detail and a critical evaluation is given of its domain of application, based on the experience obtained so far. Experimental techniques adapted to its intermittent mode of operation are also discussed. (Author)
