The thrust of the physical research portion of the program is to reduce the detrimental impact of the highway upon its environment by reducing air and water pollution and by searching for means to both evaluate and minimize noise pollution. The socio-economic problems related to these pollutants are investigated along with other presently unquantifiable factors to endeavor to determine their levels of acceptance and influence upon properties in the immediate vicinity of the highway. The ultimate goal will be the provision of a set of tools or guides that can be utilized by a decisionmaker in designing and locating a transportation corridor.
