Recent petroleum fuel shortages and rapid price increases have stimulated research and development on non-petroleum-derived mobility fuels and nonconventional power sources for ground transportation vehicles. Three alternatives to gasoline- or diesel-fueled engines for military ground transportation vehicles are hydrogen-fueled i.c. engines, electric vehicles, and fuel cell/electric vehicles. Each of these is briefly described. Demonstration programs to evaluate each as a means of reducing petroleum demand for military ground vehicles is recommended. (ERA citation 06:005036)
