The report covers an investigation into the mechanics of handling external cargo by helicopters. It comprises an analytical study of airborne hoist systems and comparisons of load acquisition techniques, crane-type long landing gears, and single- and multi-point suspension systems. The vertical bounce phenomenon is analyzed in detail and found to be dependent on inputs to the thrust control system provided by the pilot. The stability of the helicopter in forward flight is analyzed for neutrally stable slung loads. Forward-speed stability and control limits are usually the result of the effects of load aerodynamic instability on the handling qualities of the helicopter. For aerodynamically unstable loads, multi-point suspension allows a significant increase in forward speed over single-point suspension. A test plan describing equipment and associated items required to quantify and qualify the defined design parameters is included. (Author)
