Problems involved in planning a soft landing descent through the dense Venus atmosphere and the rarefied Mars atmosphere are reviewed. Characteristics are given for direct and orbital descent programs, aerodynamic braking, ablative shielding, and tradeoffs between weight and velocity considerations.
