The major focus of the trip was collection of data from sources at the Panama Canal Commission on Panama Canal operations. this included data on lock capacity, transit times, lock operations, and maintenance. This data will be used in simulation models to model the operation of the canal and several alternative scenarios that have been proposed to improve the flow of ships through the canal. We met with the management of the Panama Canal, reviewed their operations, had discussions on acquiring needed data, and spent some time at each of the locks timing ship throughput.
