The symposium was held in Stockholm 28th of October 1998, 40th anniversary of FOA p/FOA 1 (the Bureau of Planning/Division of Defense Analysis) at the Defense Research Establishment. An important activity at FOA 1 is the modelling future warfare on different levels. To be able to model it is of course necessary to have ideas about the character of future conflicts. Due to several reasons (modern technology, new actors e.g. non-state actors changing views on casualties at least in the west etc.) armed conflicts could look differently in the future. The purpose of the symposium was to discuss, from several perspectives, the use of military means in the future.
