The History of the Third Army, 1932-1944, (from organization to combat), was started with the other three field armies on 9 August 1932, by direction by the Army Chief of Staff, General Douglas MacArthur. Third Army was assigned the area formerly administered by the Fourth and Eighth Corps, with its mission coverage the area the Gulf of Mexico and the southern frontier. The Commander had a dual hat as the Corps Area Commander. With the change of command 30 September 1940, the Army HQ was moved from Atlanta to Fort Sam Houston. The Army continued with large scale maneuvers to develop and test doctrine and personnel. Its mission of training and preparation continued until its was alerted and sent overseas for combat deployment. The mission and command was taken over by the Fourth Army.
