This study was conducted by the Louis Berger Group, Inc. for Metrovias, the private concessionaire of the Buenos Aires Subway system, examined the feasibility of the design and construction of a central maintenance facility for their fleet of subway cars. According to their contract with the government, the construction of a new maintenance shop should be started by 2001 and completed in 2004. Currently, the Subway system only has a number of small, ineffective maintenance yards. In addition to a new yard, Metrovias will also be replacing most of the existing shop equipment. The U.S. export potential for this project is valued realistically at $16 million out of a $38 million project cost. The types of equipment which must be imported include a shunting locomotive, temporary bogies, high pressure industrial washers, large diameter vertical or bench drills, high pressure hydraulic presses, in pit lathes, bridge cranes, wheel lathes, dynamic wheel balancing machines, 1500 Vcc substation, a continuous metal saw, testing equipment, a wheel press, and axle lathe, a wheel boring machine, an axle cleaning machine, a paint facility, and under floor cleaning equipment.
