FIBERGLASS HAS REPLACED WOOD as a material for new hull construction of Navy small craft to 60 feet in length. Since the introduction of the first 28 foot fiberglass personnel boat in 1947 the Navy has contracted for the construction of more than 3,000 fiberglass small craft, the largest a 57 foot Mine-sweeping Boat. Today we are looking to larger fiberglass craft and asking where the size limit may be. This article summarizes the Navy's experience with fiberglass hulls and considers the future of the material in Naval service.
