The electromagnetic threat to future aircraft is studied and evaluated on the basis of the evolution of the avionic systems. The high level of integration of these systems combined with the increased number of electromagnetic sources which may interfere with the performance of the overall weapon system create the need to reexamine the usual design and testing approach in order to reach an adequate level of aircraft hardening. It is essential to design and test at system level rather than at hardware level. System design guidelines are discussed. Areas where basic research studies need to be undertaken are highlighted.
