The performance of lifting reentry spacecraft is examined in the context of realistic aerodynamic characteristics. Particular attention is devoted to the degradation of these characteristics at low flight Reynolds numbers and its impact on performance. Upon a critical review of continuum flow in the noted range of Reynolds numbers, estimates of aerodynamic characteristics are set forth; on this basis reentry trajectories are determined for representative spacecraft. The changes in maximum longitudinal and lateral ranges of the spacecraft upon reentry from equatorial orbits are used to measure the relative importance of the parameters of the problem, namely, the characteristics of the vehicle, of the reentry trajectory, and of the environment.
