For jet aircraft flying at high subsonic and supersonic speeds and fitted with thin wings of small aspect ratio, the most effective way of shortening takeoff distance is to lower the specific load on the wing artificially by deflecting the engine thrust vector. It is assumed that the line of action of the thrust vector always passes through the airplane's center of gravity. To ensure minimum takeoff distance, the thrust-vector rotation must be accomplished when the optimum dynamic head of the particular aircraft has been reached. The climb to the specified obstacle height must be performed without trajectory acceleration. There is a limit to the shortening of takeoff distance that is possible by deflecting the engine thrust vector. (Author)
