Human safety aspects are considered within the context of manned space flight, in particular Spacelab. The complexity of safety tasks is illustrated, and the contention is underlined that application of simple rules and procedures to the exclusion of reason and experience is perhaps more hazardous in the false confidence they give than in the failures they prevent.
