On behalf of NASA's Office of Advanced Concepts and Technology (OACT), the CGBA middeck payload is sponsored by BioServe Space Technologies, a NASA Center for the Commercial Development of Space (CCDS) based at the University of Colorado-Boulder. This payload, manifested for STS-54 in January 1993, is a continuing effort to support commercial investigations in biomedical testing and drug development, Controlled Ecological Life Support System (CELSS) development, and manufacture of biological-based materials in the microgravity environment. The CGBA has been designed to support a wide variety of biomaterials, life sciences and biotechnology investigations on each flight. For STS-54, 28 separate commercial investigations will be supported.
