Population trends and technological innovation have combined to create the problem for which this study was undertaken. The accelerating rate of population growth indicates that a considerable increase in world capacity to transport goods will be required over the next 15 to 20 years. Recent developments in transportation technology appear to offer carriers using water routes, both inland and marine, the opportunity to respond most appropriately to the prospective need. (Author)
