A closed circuit television system was installed and evaluated as an alternative to manual surveillance and control of tunnel traffic on the Baytown-Laporte Tunnel. As a result of the study it was determined to be more economical to use T.V. surveillance and also the time required to clear tunnel stoppages was reduced when compared with the manual surveillance system. An evaluation of driver compliance to speed limit signs, methods of recording data, and traffic flow characteristic studies are also discussed. (Author)
