Ability to estimate acquisition costs of military aircraft is a key ingredient in many weapon system and force structure studies. Because of this, development of aircraft cost-estimating techniques has occupied a substantial portion of the working time of people in the cost analysis business. The final stages of an effort to compile, formalize and document analytical techniques used for estimating aircraft development and production costs are under way. The present discussion will refer primarily to a memorandum having to do with airframe cost estimation. (Author)
