The objective of the study is to assess the feasibility of increasing the accuracy of short baseline satellite geodesy to the sub-millimeter level. The primary focus was to study the gains obtainable if observations from higher frequency satellites could be added to observations of GPS (Global Positioning System) satellites. Data has been simulated from constellations of satellites transmitting carrier frequencies exceeding 15 GHz. Monte-Carlo satellites were placed in geostationary orbits, as most of the actual microwave satellites are in such orbits. Monte-Carlo satellites with orbital planes inclined 60 degrees were simulated as well. Simulated fits were made to carrier phase observables from both typical GPS satellite constellations and microwave satellites. Studies show that adding a mixture of microwave satellites to the current GPS constellation can yield the desired accuracies for baselines on the order of 10 km or less.
