With its commissioning on 9 July 1977, USS PEGASUS (PHM-1) became the first hydrofoil to be officially designated a United States ship. This paper traces the dubious history of the Patrol Combatant Hydrofoil Missileship (PHM) and examines the advantages/disadvantages of this ship. The many proposed missions for the PHM are discussed. It is concluded that although the PHM is an extremely capable ship, it does have limitations. A single six-ship squadron which now exists, with no additional PHM's planned, will never be able to perform all of the missions that have been proposed. It is suggested that the U.S. Navy refine tactics and limit the PHM to specific missions so it can find its most effective role among other combatants.
