A computer model for the numerical analysis of the dynamic response of military bridges when traversed by tracked or wheeled vehicles was developed. The bridges may be of nonuniform depth and are represented as a single span, simply supported beam. The vehicles were represented as a multi-degree of freedom, linear spring-mass system with viscous damping. The model accounts for initial dynamic conditions, variable vehicle velocity, and the loss of vehicle wheel contact with the surface of the bridge. Predictions are presented for a Challenger type vehicle crossing UK BR 80 type bridges concerning bridge length, ramp slopes, vehicle velocity and initial conditions. Results show that impact factor remains below the design limit for vehicle speed up to 35 kph. The state of the vehicle at entry, and the slope of the bridge ramps has a very significant effect upon the dynamic response of the bridge during the passage of the vehicles.
