A vibratory snow compactor was tested for its effectiveness in compacting snow for support of wheeled vehicles and aircraft traffic. The compactor was tested on both undisturbed snow and on snow which had been processed with a snow miller. It was found that the use of the vibratory compactor alone is adequate for construction of roads for light, wheeled traffic only. A combination of the milling process and vibratory compaction is essential for support of heavy wheeled vehicles and aircraft. The vibratory compactor was not as effective in compacting snow as the tracks of the crawler tractor required for towing. (Author)
