This study traces the evolution of Army training management doctrine from 1945 to 1988. It explores the changes that have taken place in the doctrine by examining the purpose of training, key training concepts, the training management process, and the operational doctrine of the time. The study takes a chronological look at training doctrine and develops three major themes to categorize training management. They are; 1945 to 1974, 'Train to Time', 1975 to 1984, 'Train to Standard,' and 1985 to 1988, 'Train to mission.' Conclusions of the study indicate the reasons for the changes in Army training management doctrine since 1945. This study emphasizes the importance of understanding training and provides information on future implications of training management doctrine.
