This report has been prepared by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) in response to Senate Report 103-310 of the Senate Appropriations Committee, which accompanied H.R. 4556, requesting the Department to develop a 5-year strategic plan outlining the future of its Heavy Truck Safety Research Program. The program is in four broad areas which were identified as warranting either continued attention or new initiatives. They are: problem identification/crash causal analysis; facilitating development and early deployment of advanced technology collision avoidance and crashworthiness systems; ensuring efficient and safe driver/vehicle interaction; and support of NHTSA/FHWA safety performance standards development programs.
