Continuously variable (stepless) transmissions are being developed by many auto manufacturers for introduction in production vehicles in the 1990s. Fuji Heavy Industries has already succeeded in developing a continuously variable transmission that employs a steel-belt and a magnetic-powder clutch. Called an ECVT (for electro-continuously variable transmission), it is the first such continuously variable transmission to be commercially marketed. The ECVT incorporates a computer-control unit, for the magnetic-powder clutch, that was developed and manufactured by Mitsubishi Electric. The article introduces the ECVT and its clutch-control system.
