Analytical methods are presented for evaluating performance of open propellers, ducted propellers, and turbofans for the purpose of selecting the most suitable propulsion system for Army aircraft mission requirements. Techniques are presented for tradeoff analyses and optimization of the basic design parameters of each propulsion system. These techniques utilize specially developed nomographs, which can be effectively applied for preliminary design purposes. The nomographs and other numerical results presented in the report are based on the available performance data for the three propulsion systems. (Author)
