This design note provides information on the design of a cathodic protection system for a pipeline buried in soil. The note is intended for use with irrigation pipelines but may also apply to steel pipelines for other purposes. Items covered are principles of corrosion, causes of pipeline corrosion, galvanic series, protection measures (coating insulation, and corrosion cell current reversal), soil test data, cathodic protection design and instruments.
