Car traffic in urban areas has many negative effects that may not be possible to overcome with technical improvements to cars and/or fuels. One way to encou rage reduced ecological impact and a more pleasant urban environment is to use bicycles rather than cares for short trips. Research regarding the conversion of short cart trips to short bicycle trips occurs with a variety of disciplines and for a variety of different reasons. A review of these methods, theories and models revealed that the choice of transport mode depends on an interaction factors upon the individual (both subjective and objective), on the vehicle, on the transport infrastructure and on the society as a whole. The conversion of car travel to bicycle travel is a complex problem, that requires several different solutions. Even maintaining current bicycle traffic is an important strategy for the future. For conversion to occur, a combination of increased support for bicycle traffic, restrictions against cars, if policies for the design of infrastructure and marketing, and various incentives are necessary, based on current and potential cyclist's needs and characteristics. Structural problems and the bicycle's image need to be changed within the community.
