The determination of aircraft flotation performance and operations capability on semi- and unprepared soil runways is a critical factor in developing forward area airfields in limited warfare situations. This investigation, which is a part of a continuing effort, was directed at defining landing gear-soil interaction and developing the flotation criteria to permit comparative evaluation of the relative merits of various landing gear configurations.
