Primary-feed and reflector systems for spacecraft antennas were studied, in the light of electrical specifications formulated by ESA and based upon anticipated requirements for future spacecraft missions. The antennas studied include a dual offset-reflector geometry preferred by ESA and an alternative single offset-reflector configuration. In both cases the antennas are intended to generate either shaped-beam or multiple-beam radiation-patterns with exceptional polarization purity. The electrical performance of these antennas is evaluated and new primary-feed devices which are made necessary by the exacting specifications are considered. Both theoretical and experimental aspects of the work are provided. Conclusions are drawn and recommendations made with regard to further development of preferred antenna configurations.
