A new maintenance concept has been used successfully by major commercial airlines, greatly reducing aircraft maintenance costs and improving aircraft availability for operations. Many of these same results can be achieved by the military services. Defense has applied the concept on a trial basis and expects to expand its use throughout the Department. But the services will need a better management system for controlling the application of the concept so that maximum benefits can be obtained.
