No less than 75-90% of the total freight tons going by railway are generated from private sidings. About 40% of all larger firms in Sweden requiring goods transports have private sidings at their disposal. However, these firms regard railway transport by no means generally as their main mode of transport. Only some 25% of their transported tons are going by railway. The costs of freight transport by road and by railway varies widely depending on, in the first place, the distance of the main transport and the feeder transport, respectively, the package type, technique and number of handling operations, and the shipment size. The results of the estimations of the relative costs made in this study are summarized.
