International callobration between NASA, ESA, Canada and Japan on the space station project includes a sub-project called the Japanese experiment module (JEM). Toshiba has concluded phase B of the study on a remote manipulator system for the JEM (JEMRMS) and has developed key technology for it. For the JEMRMS, Japan's first space manipulator system, it was necessary to develop new technology, such as a system for controlling the RMS in a microgravity environment, which previous spacecraft projects did not utilize. Presented here is an overview of the current JEMRMS system design and key technology developments. Technologies developed in the JEM program will be the basis of future manipulator development for an orbital service vehicle, a large platform and a space factory.
