Ferri instability, caused by the inflow of a discontinuity surface (slipline) in the inlet was studied. A criterion for the appearance of the Ferri instability was derived. Flat inlets are most, and semirotationsymmetric inlet the least, sensitive to Ferri instability. Means to avoid the instability are discussed. Strength and penetration depth of the slipline play a role in triggering the instability, although this role is not clarified.
