The ground data handling system which the European Space Agency (ESA) is developing is presented as it will be used to support the European geostationary meteorological satellite Meteosat, to be launched early 1977. The overall system aspect is explained as well as the data processing requirements for image processing and meteorological tasks. The real time environment in which the work has to be performed is defined by the incoming data steams (mainly images) and the products which have to be disseminated to the users via the satellite.
