This report documents the results of a conceptual control system study undertaken to determine the feasibility of employing a T-2, configured for variable stability operation, as a high angle-of-attack simulator and ascertain the envelope over which a valid simulation can be obtained. A model-following control system is defined that forces the T-2 to duplicate the motions of departing aircraft which exhibit characteristics of airplanes in the Navy inventory. The quality of simulation is excellent within an envelope defined by 15 deg in incremental angle of attack and + or - 15 deg in sideslip. A faithful reproduction of the predeparture and initial sudden departure motions of the model aircraft is obtained within this envelope and would allow for good training transfer in the difficult-to-train incipient departure region of flight. Techniques for modifying the model aircraft responses to increase the simulation capability of the variable stability T-2 are investigated. Several promising methods for doing this are developed and evaluated. (Author)
