The E-TRAN road powered electric vehicle (RPEV) receives electrical energy from the rail on the road surface. The vehicle uses the energy to power the vehicle. It can also store electrical energy in a battery onboard the vehicle. The RPEV uses electricity from the battery when it is not in contact with an electrified rail. This test was designed to answer the question about how well does the RPEV perform when a certain percentage of electrified rail is off. In addition to the investigation described above, the investigators took this opportunity to measure the contact bounce experienced between the pentograph and the rail. This was measured with an oscillospope and is also reported here.
