The factors controlling emissions of up to eighteen species of polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbons (PNA) and of phenols in automotive exhaust have been studied in one vehicle without emission controls and in two vehicles with engine-modification emission controls. The major factors controlling PNA emissions were emission control systems, PNA in fuel, and oil consumption rate. These and other minor contributing factors and mechanisms are discussed. Results are presented.
