Payload activity on the STS-4 flight will include the first of two planned additional flights of the NOSL experiment. This handheld cabin experiment was first flown as part of the OSTA-1 payload on STS-2. The STS-2 flight was shortened and sufficient time was not available to obtain the data for the NOSL experiment objectives. The objective of these flights is to relate lightning structure and occurrence to storm development. The potential value of achieving these objectives is such that further opportunities were requested, and the NOSL is presently scheduled for flight on STS-4 and STS-6. It is intended that this pre-launch report serve both these flights with a final post-launch evaluation to be submitted subsequent to the second flight. This Mission Operation Report contains details pertinent to the NOSL flights only. Information regarding the other science payload on STS-4, the Monodisperse Latex Reactor (MLR), are contained in Mission Operation Report (MOR) E-420-03-82-02. Details regarding the STS-4 flight itself are contained in the MOR Pre-Launch Report No. M-989-82-04.
