The purpose of this study was to develop a mathematical model to describe the flow of traffic on four-lane divided highways. Special emphasis was placed on the lane changing maneuvers. Experimental traffic flow field data was taken at five locations and lane changing data was obtained at three locations. Using the lane changing models, a simple formulation of two-lane delays was developed which modeled the delay caused by trucks on upgrade sections of roadway. (BPR abstract)
