The report is a case study presenting data from in-depth investigations of 167 motor vehicle crashes involving lap/shoulder-belted occupants. The accidents and the crashes had to meet specific criteria, and represent a wide range of accident configuration and severity. Volume 2 (NTSB/SS-88/03) contains the 167 case summaries that provided the data discussed in Volume 1.
