The aim was to elucidate the manner in which advanced methods of traffic control for the optimization of coordinated, computerized, signal systems (traffic lights) can influence energy consumption and air pollution in urban areas. The calculated effects on all types of traffic, including public transport, are explained, and it is attempted to illustrate them on a national basis. It is claimed that use of the computer programme TRANSYT has led to reductions in energy consumption. This and other programmes are described. It is predicted that in Denmark there are 1000 signal systems which could to advantage be better coordinated. (AB) 30 refs.
