The volume of air traffic continues to grow and each year there are an increased number of flights. In order to cope with such growth it is necessary to make optimum use of the airport runways available. An optimum utilization of such resources also means that maintenance ahs to be tackled with a structured and deliberate planned approach where adequate advanced warning and insight is needed with regard to the state of runway pavements. By carrying out the right maintenance at the right time the need for spontaneous or remedial maintenance is reduced which in turn produces economic benefits. In addition to that, if maintenance is well-timed then less severe measures may be applied which is of benefit to air traffic, as the runways in question will be kept open and available for use for longer periods. In order to expedite the rational management of pavements it is necessary to be able to predict how the condition of such pavements will perform over the course of time.
