The Livermore-Amador Valley is situated some 40 miles east of the City of San Francisco and across the San Francisco Bay. The outward movement of city residents to the Valley has brought increased demand for transportation improvements, schools, parks, utilities, and city services. Since extremely limited public transportation exists in this area at present, new residents are purchasing automobiles, commuting by auto to work, increasing traffic congestion, and aggravating air pollution, a critical Valley condition. The study of public transportation for the Valley was initiated with the hypothesis that a properly conceived and implemented bus service coordinated with rapid transit service can reduce rush-hour congestion as well as meet a multitude of local transportation needs. Both feeder bus service to BART stations as well as intra-Valley transportation service are considered. (Author)
